Resting Heart Rate
Understanding Resting Heart Rate
Resting heart rate describes how many times your heart beats per minute while your body is completely at rest. It is one of the most commonly tracked health metrics in wearables.
Typical Resting Heart Rate Values
- above 80 bpm → relatively high
- 60–80 bpm → typical range
- 50–60 bpm → good cardiovascular fitness
- below 50 bpm → common in endurance athletes
Resting Heart Rate by Fitness Level
- low activity → often 70–80 bpm
- active individuals → around 60–70 bpm
- endurance athletes → often 40–60 bpm
Factors That Influence Resting Heart Rate
- fitness level
- stress
- sleep quality
- alcohol consumption
- illness
- training load
How to Interpret Resting Heart Rate
Your personal baseline is the most important reference. Trends over time are much more meaningful than single measurements.
Resting heart rate becomes more informative when interpreted together with
HRV
and
VO₂max.
